Day 199 - Park Road Post

Miramar

Such a tranquil looking scene, yet Park Road Post is the finishing place for hobbits, elves, orcs, and tall, skinny blue creatures from another planet.

Day 198 - Foghorn

Foghorn

What does a foghorn look like? We heard one about half an hour ago and quickly went down to the beach (about half a block away), along with a few neighbours from the street, to see what was going on. We saw this boat heading across the harbour and into the fog. It was moving between the Petone foreshore and Matiu/Somes Island, an unusual route for a ship to be taking.

Day 195 - Santina's window

Santina's window

This is one of Santina's favourite spots: the bathroom window. She sometimes jumps out of it and flies around to the back door ... but it's not always open. Usually someone notices her missing (after a while) or sees her trying to perch on the adjacent laundry window. Once she has been let in again, she promptly returns to "her" bathroom. It seems like a great game for a pigeon to play.

Day 194 - Flower power

Flower power

I love these wall displays in a garden centre, made up of oversized daisiy-style flowers. Such a cheerful explosion of colour.

Day 192 - Oriental Bay fountain

Oriental Bay fountain

As a child, our parents had a friend called Wally who had built a house in the hills of Roseneath overlooking Oriental Bay. Wally would tease my brother and I, saying that he had a switch in the next room which turned the fountain on and off in the bay below. We'd arrive at his house and ask to see the fountain; sometimes he said he'd switched it on before we got there, and other times he said the fountain needed to have 'a rest' but he would turn it on again later. My brother believed him for quite some time and would get annoyed that Wally when wouldn't turn the fountain on and off by request! I still drive past the fountain and think of Wally and 'his' switch.

Day 190 - Protest

Protest

Protesters gathered outside the Supreme Court, opened today by Prince William. Dual protests took place: members of the New Zealand Republican Party called for cutting ties with the British Monarchy. The other involved employees from the Ministry of Justice, protesting an unjust pay system at the Ministry.

Day 186 - Flower table

Flower table
A triumphant purchase

This is my favourite piece of furniture. I bought it at the Martinborough Fair a few years ago and lugged it all the way back to my car, several streets away. Not bought for its functional abilities, it boasts all the things I love: daisies, purple, and wrought iron. For my 30th birthday, I unscrewed the flower top and gave it to a cake maker to replicate. She produced a stunning purple daisy chocolate cake, which I cut and presented on the table. The light in this picture makes the colour look a little more blue, but it's most definitely a bold purple colour.
